Merrill Police Chief: No Evidence of Inappropriate Relationship so far

Merrill Police Chief Ken Neff tells NewsChannel 7 at this point criminal charges seem unlikely for a former high school band teacher under investigation for an allegations of "questionable behavior" in regard to a 17-year-old student.

Merrill High School band director Matt Callope resigned last week amid the allegations.

The incident report cited two anonymous tips.

Chief Neff says they are still waiting for results on the search of a computer.

The chief said interviews had been conducted with Callope, the alleged victim and family.

Friday, Chief Neff say the relationship appeared to be nothing more than a friendship.

Merrill Police Chief Ken Neff tells NewsChannel 7 so far they have found no evidence of an inappropriate relationship between former band director Matt Callope and a 17-year-old student.

The chief says they have been sorting through electronic records including computers and cell phones but so far the relationship appears to be just a friendship.

The investigation began after two anonymous tips.

Callope resigned Tuesday.

Merrill High School band director Matt Callope has resigned from the job amid allegations of "questionable behavior" with a student.

Merrill Superintendent Walter Liepart tells NewsChannel 7 Callope resigned Tuesday. He had been placed on paid leave last Friday after the district got the allegation of questionable behavior with a student.

Liepart will not say what that specific allegation is. But he says it was turned over to the Merrill Police Department for an investigation.

Liepart says the school district was going to launch it's own investigation, but Callope resigned so quickly after he was placed on leave, they never got it started.

Callope had been with the district for 4 years.

Liepart says other music teachers will fill take over his duties until his replacement can be found.
