UPDATE: Tues 9:58 AM, Oct. 22, 2013

Merrill Area Public Schools spokesperson says a motion to move 5th graders to the middle school failed Monday night 4-5.

The motion initially drew a lot of criticism from parents, but only about eight parents were in attendance at Monday night's meeting.

The recommendation was made based on space needs at Washington Elementary and Jefferson Elementary schools. Administrators said moving 5th graders to Prairie River Middle School would not require significant program changes or construction.

A copy of the minutes from Monday night's meeting were not approved and were not available to NewsChannel 7 at the time of this report.
