Maine Elementary School Students are Fired Up for Reading

It's most students favorite time of the school day, lunch. Friday lunch time was even more exciting for a group of students as they were joined by some very special guests.

Looking around the crowded lunchroom at Maine Elementary School, one table stands out among the rest.

"I get to eat lunch with a firefighter," third grader Zach Wilker exclaimed.

Wilker is one of twelve students who was rewarded Friday for reaching his reading goal. As a prize, Wilker and the other students got the VIP treatment from the Town of Maine Fire Department.

"Every kid's dream, every kid's want sometimes is to just be a little bit of a firefighter for a few hours," Town of Maine Fire Department Interim Fire Chief Joe Bozinski explained.

The celebration capped off the school's reading program dubbed "Fire Up for Reading." First place winner got to ride to school in a fire truck and ate breakfast with the firefighters at the station. Second place winners got to eat lunch with the local heroes. Principal Marie Northup says in her book, all the students are winners.

"In the end I look at them all as winners because reading increases their knowledge and world experience," she said.

"Any kid loves to get to ride in a fire truck, including us big kids and that's why we do what we do because there's a lot of kid left in us. To put smiles on their faces is just outstanding," Interim Chief Bozinski smiled. "We hope this sticks with them for their entiree life, the momories that we hopefully created today."

Mission accomplished. When we asked first grader Isaac Ingram if he had fun he told us, "Today was probably the best day of my life."

This is the first time the school and the fire department have teamed up like this. They plan on doing it again even bigger and better next year.
