Every parent in the World knows just how hard it can be to get their child to put down the video game controller, cell phone, or ipad and crack open a good old fashion book. But if you're looking for some tips this is what educators at Evergreen Elementary in Kronenwetter suggest.

1. Set a reading time. Many of us are so busy that we just need to schedule in time. Try right after dinner or even bedtime.

2. Make it a family event. Try "shared reading." That is where the parent reads one page and the child reads one page. By alternating the parent is setting an example for the child. The child can hear the parents fluency and expression and then model their reading after that.

3. Make reading interactive. Ask your child questions while your reading. See if they can predict what happens next. Put their imagination to work.

4. Visit the public library. There are books out there for everyone. The public library allows your child to explore all the options.

5. Have your child read out loud. While you're clearing the dinner table, washing dishes, or folding the laundry have your child read to you. That way you can monitor their reading progress.
