Greenheck Field House to Expand Thanks to $1 Million Contribution

Updated: Wed 10:58 PM, Jun 20, 2012

D.C. Everest's Greenheck Field House is getting a big expansion, thanks to an ever bigger donation.

The Robert and Ruth Greenheck Charitable Remainder Trust is contributing $1 million for a Health Enhancement Center.

For the last six months the Health Enhancement Committee, consisting of educators and members of the public, had been planning a 14,000 square foot addition to Greenheck Field House.

Because hadn't intended to ask for any tax dollars to fund it, they were getting ready to start a fundraising campaign.

Then the Greenheck family stepped in, offering the $1 million.

Greenheck Field House already has a lot to offer students and the public. With a gymnasium, pool, ice arena, racquetball courts and weight room, Greenheck offers a variety of fitness opportunities.

However, public membership increased 25 percent last year, and space, particularly in the weight room, is running out.

"The Greenheck facility is a wonderful facility in our community however so many people and kids use it that we've kind of outgrown our space so we will be adding a Health Enhancement Center," Dr. Kristine Gilmore, superintendent of D.C. Everest Schools said.

Aaron Mull, who oversees Greenheck Field House, says the expansion is certainly needed.

"It's packed. You look at the room we're in right now and its a fairly small room," he said.

Now that funding is secured, the new building will be added to the south side of the field house. It will include a 10,000 square foot fitness area including free weights and machines, a dance studio, classroom space and an office.

"This will be one of the finest high school health facilities in the country," said Todd Bohm, an assistant high school principal, who also chaired the Health Enhancement Committee.

The district has preliminary drawings all set and bids for the project will be going on this summer.

The expansion could be completed as soon as late October.

The committee is looking for donations for new fitness equipment.
