It's being called a war on milk. The question being argued, is it good for kids or is it making obesity worse? And should it be taken off the school lunch menu?
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Meidicine, PCRM, petitioned the U.S. Government last Thursday to remove milk from the National School Lunch Program.
The PCRM is a non-profit organization that promotes a vegan diet, preventative medicine and alternatives to animal research. Doctors make up roughly 10% of its total membership.
Their argument is that milk is high in fat, high in sugar and high in animal protein.
According to the PCRM recent studies also suggest milk doesn't help protect kids' bones.
But not all health professionals agree.
"I think the biggest thing is milk, we know it has the calcium. We know it has other important nutrients so its definitely important for growing kids. You know one thing to keep in mind, and this is true with all foods, you know some is definitely good. If you're having too much than that's maybe an issue." Registered Dietitian Samantha Bulgrin told Newschannel 7.
Dietitians and parents alike argue kids are more likely to drink a glass of milk than eat the eight cups of spinach it would take to get the same amount of calcium.
