With kids back in school, many are taking advantage of extracurricular activities, some for the very first time.

Football, tennis, band and boy scouts are all taking up time for countless students, and those involved are getting an important lesson outside of the classroom.

Amaya McCann, a 7th grader at Antigo Middle School, loves playing in volleyball and basketball.

"You get a lot of exercise and you get to work with your teammates and you get to interact with a lot of people," McCann said.

Antigo District Athletic Director Matthew Meronk says participation in sports has grown at the middle school.

"It teaches them great responsibility, respect, attitude, leadership qualities a whole bunch of variety of things and I think that's important," he said.

The athletic director says kids who play sports or participate in other after school activities learn teamwork and respect, they meet new friends and develop qualities that will carry them into adulthood.

"I know it's a big deal and I know it's what a lot of people look for on resumes. It shows again that you can juggle and multitask more than just school," he said.

It's also an easy and fun way to stay fit.

"Sports are very fun, very competitive game, it's good to be active out in the sun getting the workout," said 8th grader Michael Zabrowski.

Kids who do well on the field tend to do well in the classroom.

"I do. I mean, not the top of the class but I'm mostly As I'd say," Zabrowski said.

"Pretty good, you know," McCann shrugs.

Students who are involved in extracurricular activities also tend to stay out of trouble.
