Wisconsin state schools superintendent Tony Evers tells The Associated Press that he will seek to run for a second term.

The 60-year-old Evers broke the news to AP on Friday.

He was first elected to the nonpartisan position as state superintendent of public instruction in April 2009. He would be up for re-election on April 2.

No one has stepped forward publically yet to challenge Evers. Candidates can take out paperwork to run starting in December, with nomination papers due on Jan. 2.

Evers has found himself at the forefront of major issues during his term. Last year he opposed Gov. Scott Walker's proposal taking nearly all collective bargaining rights away from teachers, but he has worked with Walker on a number of other issues.
