The Boys & Girls Club of the Wausau Area already provides a safe environment for kids to learn and thrive. Soon, it will also provide an extra meal.
The dinner program is launching once school starts. It's being funded through the Department of Public Instruction and the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin.
"I think its a huge plus for parents," said Brian Stezenski-Williams, Ph.D. "We've historically had too many kids who spend all five hours after school here until 8 o'clock without anything but after school snack," he said.
The Wausau area club qualifies for the funding because last year more than 50 percent of students in the Wausau School District were eligible for free or reduced lunch.
Providing kids with dinner and staffing will cost between $41,000 and $45,000 annually.
The Wausau area club, which has three locations, serves 2,300 members. During the school year, Stezenski-Williams says between 250-300 members visit the clubs daily.
