The Antigo Area Community Food Pantry is doing much more than keeping food on the table for families in need - it's providing education for clients to make healthier food choices.

The food pantry received a $10,000 grant from the Community Health Foundation of Langlade Hospital, and is already putting it to good use.

A registered dietitian is training volunteers on eating right, so they can in turn train clients on how to make better choices at the pantry.

"They will ask the client if they have any health problems and then they will hopefully direct them to the appropriate food choice, such as if you have high blood pressure, please pick an item that has less sodium," said Donna Ruf, the pantry's coordinator.

Volunteers will undergo several training sessions on topics including reading nutrition labels and portion control.

Ruf says the grant also allows them to label foods and display visual aids on healthy eating.

She's hopeful the program will help address some of the county's pressing health issues like obesity, hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.

The food pantry is located at 637 Superior Street and is open every other Wednesday, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
