Local Law Enforcement Explain What Authority They Have When It Comes to Illegal Immigration

Posted: Fri 8:50 AM, Jan 07, 2011

Hundreds if not thousands of people are waiting for the opportunity to call the United States home.

Some do it legally, others do not.

As our series "Living Illegal" continues local law enforcment give their take on illegal immigration.

Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel says, "We see a lot of illegal immigrants and we deal with illegal immigrants. We don't look at it as a problem in a sense that they are illegals, we look at crime as the problem for us."

"As far as illegal immigration enforcement , we basically don't have any enforcement activity or really enforcement authority," says Chief Hardel.

One high profile case involving an illegal immigrant is the murder of Wausau teen, Breanna Schneller.

Raul Ponce-Rocha, who is a citizen of Mexico, and living here illegally is awaiting trial and charged in her death.

But the Wausau Police Department and Marathon County Sheriff's Department say everything they do, including whether it involves an illegal immigrant or not, is in an effort to keep the public safe.
