A group of Wausau area volunteers wants to build a community garden in the city this spring.
The Wausau Second Street Community Garden will be adjacent to Bridge Community Health Clinic, which donated the land for its use.
The co-owner of Downtown Grocery, who is involved in the project, says the garden will give people the chance to benefit from locally grown food.
"Using food to connect land to connect to place connect to your neighbors in that shared common experience of growing vegetables," said Kevin Korpela.
Korpela says an adivsory board is still working out the details. Members have already raised $10,000 and are hoping to raise another $10,000 for supplies and to get the land ready for growing.
The space is about one-fifth of an acre, with room for 18 plots. Plots will be available for rent on a sliding fee scale, so almost anyone can take part in the community garden.
Businesses are also encouraged to rent a plot and then donate leftover vegetables to local shelters.
If this garden is a success, organizers hope to build several more throughout the county.
