Maple syrup season is here, and harvesters are hoping the weather will cooperate to make it a success.
Workers at area syrup farms say that the spring harvest is crucial to their success; especially since it is the time they bring in their largest amount of syrup. But for this year's harvest to benefit farmers, and those who buy the syrup, the conditions have to be just right.
Co Owner of Cory and Rick’s Sugar Shack in Antigo, Rick Beran says, “Being warm like this is not what we want. But in years past, we have had a week or two that’s warm like this and if it cools back off the season comes back as long as the conditions are getting into freezing at night again."
Workers say they are optimistic about the season, and are working hard to make sure this year's harvest is one of their best yet. The shop says that they have been hard at work since the beginning of March, bringing in as much sap as they can. They say the spring is the best time to harvest syrup because the trees won't suffer harm from drilling.
Crews will continue getting sap as long as the trees will allow it into the warmer months.
