Beef prices are at an all time high and the price of pork isn't far behind thanks to a deadly virus killing millions of baby pigs in the U.S.
In March of 2013 the price of ham averaged $2.68 per pound in the Midwest. The price of bacon was just more than $5.00 per pound. Now fast forward to March of 2014 and the average price of ham is up to $2.84 per pound while the average price of bacon is up to $5.39 per pound. Nationwide, pork prices have been inflated up to 50 or 60 percent.
It's all because of a deadly virus known as the PED virus, which is causing severe diarrhea and vomiting in pigs. Millions of piglets have died from it already.
If you haven't bought your Easter ham just yet, don't worry. David Jagler owns Townline Market in Wausau. He says while the cost of bacon and other pork products are on the rise, the price of Easter ham should remain relatively stable.
"We haven't seen ham prices go up much because usually the hams have been put away for quite a while before the virus even had an affect."
Prices here in the Midwest are also less than the national average. So far, Wisconsin only has 11 reported cases of the PED virus.
Jagler says the best strategy for avoiding the rising price of meat is to pay attention and shop the sales.
