Packers' Pledge Brings 312 New Trees to NE Wis.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers' strong season last year means hundreds of new trees are getting planted this year.

For every first down the team earned during last year's regular season, the Packers pledged to provide one tree for planting. That means 312 trees will be planted in Green Bay and neighboring areas.

The trees include sugar maples, hackberry, honey locust and flowering crab. They'll be planted in a number of towns and villages in the Brown County area.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the tree-planting program helped solve two issues. Its forestry division says local governments were looking for help in getting more trees planted, and the Packers were looking for a way to offset the 450 tons of carbon dioxide produced during travel to road games.
