CHICAGO— U.S. Customs officials at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport say they recently found a hard to kill bug that could devastate the nation's grain stock if it gets established in this country.

Agriculture specialists on Aug. 16 found the Khapra beetle in a 10-pound bag of rice being shipped from India.

According to a statement Tuesday, specialists working in O'Hare's cargo area found a cast skin and larva in the rice. It was sent to U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Protection and Quarantine entomologists, who identified the beetle.

Officials say the beetle was previously intercepted earlier this month in a personal supply of bulgur wheat and in a container of tapioca powder in June. A dead beetle larva was found in January in sacks of rice and beans from India.
