Mosquito-Borne Disease Kills Alpacas in Dunn Co.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin state agriculture officials say two alpacas died and a horse was sickened at a Dunn County farm by Eastern equine encephalitis, a mosquito-borne disease.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that a human may be infected by the disease, but no cases have been reported in Wisconsin.

State veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt says the report shows that insects in northwestern Wisconsin are carrying the disease, and that humans and owners of animals should be careful.

Agriculture Department spokeswoman Donna Gilson said the alpacas showed symptoms on July 9. Laboratory tests on the animals' blood confirmed the diagnosis.

Gilson says there were seven cases of Eastern equine encephalitis between 2002 and 2010 in Wisconsin.
