The cows at the University of Wisconsin-Madison could soon be the happiest cows around.
That's because the university is doing a $3 million upgrade to their home at the Dairy Cattle Center in May. The center is one of the campus' most popular stops, where the public can see the cows that help produce the Babcock Hall Dairy Store's ice cream and cheese.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports the upgrades include gel mattresses, more spacious stalls and better ventilation. Herd manager Mike Peters says the 88 Holsteins and Jerseys are living in a facility built in 1956, when cows were much smaller. Today's cows that are genetically bred to be bigger need more room. UW-Madison is one of the few universities still keeping cows on campus.
