(Press Release) WAUSAU, WI—The Wausau Urban Community Gardens project is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of its new site on 727 Jefferson Street in Wausau, the East Towne Community Garden. Volunteers from The Home Depot and Binder Ghidorzi will be constructing the garden in preparation for this year’s growing season.

“The previous garden on Second Street was such a success that we were contacted by the Neighbor to Neighbor organization to start a new project in this area,” said Amanda Ostrowski, a Wausau Urban Community Garden board member and a Public Health Educator with the Marathon County Health Department. “The garden board was looking to expand to other parts of town, and this was a logical fit.”

This project was made possible through donations from the Greenheck Foundation, The Home Depot, Binder Ghidorzi, River Valley Bank, the City of Wausau, Commission for a Greener Tomorrow, and Bridge Community Health Clinic. Plots are rented on a sliding fee scale, which go as low as $5 per season. The plots are already filling up with only 2 plots out of the 14 remaining.

Plots are expected to open for use on June 13, 2012 and interested renters should contact Janet Schertz at Bridge Community Health Clinic to reserve a plot, 715-848-4884. For more information on the Neighbor to Neighbor project or the East Towne Garden please call Amanda Ostrowski at 715-432-0821.
