Door Co. Cherry Producers Thankful for "Normal" March

Hard to believe this time last year temperatures were near the 80s in some parts of Wisconsin. The unseasonably warm weather was then followed by frost in April. The weird weather took a toll on many industries in the state, including Door County's cherry crop.

According to WLUK-TV, Door County produced about 1.6 million pounds of cherries in 2012. A typical year sees between 10 to 12 million pounds.

“Our livelihood was taken away for a year,” says Bob Lautenbach, owner of Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery and Market.

“The trees kind of rested last year because they had a year off, so they are very hardy and very strong,” said Lautenbach.

Lautenbach says the way things look now, the upcoming crop could be the best Door County has seen in five or six years.
