MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State wildlife officials are looking for volunteers to help them tag deer as part of a mortality study.
The Department of Natural Resources is in the second year of a five-year adult deer study of adult deer and in the second year of a three-year fawn study.
Volunteers will help researchers in Sawyer and Shawano counties remove deer from ground traps, record basic information on sex and age and in some cases take blood samples. They'll also help fit the deer with ear tags and radio collars before releasing them.
The collars emit a signal when the deer dies so researchers can locate the animal and try to determine the cause of death. The DNR plans to use information to tweak how the agency estimates the state's deer population.
