Many area berry growers says despite a late start, crops are looking great.
Both Altenburg's County Gardens in Wisconsin Rapids and Arnold's Strawberries in Rudolph say they’ll be opening this week. Altenburg's doesn't have an official opening date yet, but say sometime between June 20 and June 25.
Arnold's opened Friday, June 21 at 6:30 a.m.
"This year we are kind of at the mercy of the weather. It has been a cold, wet, late spring and a cool, early month of June. It was always constantly wet. We were fighting that battle even today as the berries get ripe as they touch the ground we seem to have a little bit of spoilage going on," explains Tom Arnold, from Arnold's Berry Farm.
Other growers say they’ll way just a little bit longer.
Lakeview Berries in Mosinee says they are looking at a July 1 opening. Merry's Berries in Antigo says they plan to open on or around July 4, according to their Facebook page.
R&M Strawberries in Medford says they're also looking at opening the first week in July.
Chet's Blueberry Farm in Custer says the crops looking great, but you'll need to wait about a month for blueberries.
