Ag Dept. Reports More Spuds Planted in 2011

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture is reporting farmers are planting more crops of potatoes.

This year, they expect 62,000 acres of potatoes will be harvested from the nearly 63,000 planted.

In 2010, about 61,500 acres of potatoes were harvested, with an average yield of 395 hundredweight per acre.

Nationally, potato growers plan to harvest 1.07 million acres in 2011, up six percent from last year. The U.S. potato yield for 2010 was 395 cwt. with a total production of 397 million cwt.
