Gov. Signs Phosphorus Fertilizer Bill into Law

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill that all but bans the sale of fertilizer containing phosphorus.

The measure would prohibit people from applying fertilizer with phosphorus to turf. It could be used on first-year lawns and phosphorus-poor soils.

Retailers would be barred from displaying fertilizer with phosphorus. They could post a sign saying it was available off the sales floor.

The bill's supporters say phosphorus run-off contributes to algae growth in state waters.

The measure takes effect in a year.
