MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State politicians are scrambling to avoid the blame for higher insurance premiums.

The first changes expected to affect premiums start Nov. 1 with more coming next year when all motorists will have to carry liability insurance. The minimum levels of coverage are also going up.

The new insurance requirements were approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature earlier this year.

Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson, a Democrat from Kaukauna, says the increases are due to investment decisions made by insurance companies and nothing the Legislature did.

But Wisconsin Insurance Alliance President Andy Franken says that assertion is "flat out wrong" and the Legislature is to blame.

What happened in Madison making it mandatory to have vehicle insurance was not wrong. To many in this state don't carry insurance on their vehicles and that needs to stop! Making it a $10 fine for not having any, when all is said and done, is plain old fashioned STUPIDITY!! Coming from politicians......no surprise there. Far cheaper to pay $10 then a 6 month premium. How about towing the car on a traffic stop to impound for not having insurance? What about making insurance companies notify the state if a person drops their coverage and the persons license plates or drivers license is suspended? People will go get insurance to get their plates renewed then drop it to save the cash. All this turns out to be a politicians scratching someones back to get a campaign contribution.

Requireing everyone to have car insurance would have been the law to pass, not this one which punishes those who are already doing the right thing. Don't bother calling you state reps or senators, they won't get back to anyway except with a "thanks for your support" letter reguardless of how you think about the laws they are working on.
