Seidl leads class of nine Pointers named to All-WIAC teams

MADISON, Wis. – Members of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team brought home nine All-WIAC honors, including Pitcher of the Year, for their efforts during the 2012 season.
For the eighth consecutive season, a UWSP player has been awarded Position or Pitcher of the Year, thanks to this season's efforts by junior Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran).
In addition to Seidl, first team accolades were awarded to outfielder Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North), first baseman Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton), second baseman Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) and catcher Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) while infielder Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) and pitcher Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) were named to the honorable mention team. Clark was also selected to the all-sportsmanship team.
Seidl has been the ace of the staff this season and makes his first appearance on an All-WIAC squad. The right-hander led the team with a 1.67 ERA in 75.1 innings while recording a 5-3 record with three saves. He has also gone the distance in six of his 10 starts and recorded three shutouts. The Appleton native allowed only 17 runs (14 earned) while striking out a team-high 53 batters and allowing 22 walks.
Clark makes his first appearance on an All-WIAC First Team after playing in 41 games and making 39 starts. He posted a .331 average, his highest with the Pointers, while recording 27 RBIs, 27 runs, 12 doubles, two home runs and one triple. The outfielder's .475 slugging percentage ranked fourth on the team while his .428 on base percentage ranked fifth. The Oshkosh native also posted a .965 fielding percentage, committing only two errors in 57 chances.
Gerber makes his second consecutive All-WIAC First Team squad after starting all 42 games between first and third base. The junior led the team in chances (382), putouts (337), runs (40), double plays (35), walks (22) and home runs (3) while batting .340 with a .463 slugging percentage. The Stoughton native also recorded 40 runs, 33 RBIs, seven doubles and one triple. Gerber was also named to the D3baseball Preseason All-American Team.
This is Jirschele's third straight season he was named to an All-WIAC Team after starting all 42 games, all but two at second base. The senior led the team in at bats (176) and hits (61) while ranking second in total bases (84) and third in average (.340) and RBIs (33). On the season, the Clintonville product tallied 31 runs, 15 doubles, five stolen bases, two home runs and one triple. He also has a .974 fielding percentage with 31 double plays. Jirschele also held a team-best 15-game hitting streak and ranked tied for first with 19 multi-hit games.
In his first season with the Pointers, Schilter led the team in nearly every offensive category including average (.370), slugging (.531), RBIs (36), doubles (19), total bases (86) and stolen bases (22) and is tied for first in triples (2) and second in hits (60) and runs (39). The junior from West Bend also ranks first in consecutive games reaching base with 30, multiple-RBI games with 12 and tied for first with 19 multi-hit games. He has also started all 42 games at catcher this season.
In his third season on the team, Douglas makes his second appearance on the All-WIAC team after selected to the first team in 2011. Douglas had 41 games at shortstop this season while leading the team in sacrifice bunts (10) and assists (129). On the season, the East Troy product has posted a .310 average and .409 on base percentage while recording 33 runs, 29 RBIs, nine doubles, five stolen bases, one triple and one home run.
Fredrick makes his first All-WIAC team in his second season with the Pointers. The sophomore appeared in 11 games, making nine starts, and posted a 4-2 record with a 4.11 ERA in 57 innings. He also recorded two complete games and one save. The native of New London tallied 47 strikeouts while allowing 16 walks.
UW-Stevens Point concluded its season with a 27-15 overall record, the 16th consecutive season it has reached the 20-win plateau. The Pointers also tallied their 1,000 victory in school history in a 11-1 seven inning victory against UW-Oshkosh on April 11.
Other major award winners were Jay Fanta of UW-La Crosse, Jared Fon and Marty Herum of UW-Whitewater for Position Player of the Year and Chris Schwarz of UW-La Crosse for Coach of the Year. Garrett Scray of UWL and Jake Duske of UW-Stout were named Max Sparger Co-Scholar-Athletes.
