Wisconsin Senate to Meet Tuesday to Transfer Power

Posted: 3:27 PM Jul 11, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

The Wisconsin state Senate will meet on Tuesday to transition from Republican to Democratic control.

The Democrats have a 17-16 majority following the victory of John Lehman in a recall election over Sen. Van Wanggaard which was certified Wednesday morning by state elections officials.

Lehman was to be sworn in on Monday.

The Senate will meet on Tuesday so a new president and president pro tempore can be elected. Those positions are now held by Republicans but will be replaced with Democrats on Tuesday.

Incoming Democratic Majority Leader Mark Miller says in a statement that he is "glad Republicans have agreed to the past precedent ensuring a smooth transition through the transfer of power."

The Senate is not scheduled to be in regular session again until January.
