State Senate Approves Education Reform Bill

Posted: 6:58 PM Mar 6, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Senate has passed a bill that would require kindergarten screening exams and teacher evaluations based partly on test scores as part of an initiative to improve student reading.

The proposal is one of Gov. Scott Walker's top priorities but has drawn criticism from Democrats and state Superintendent Tony Evers. They have complained the plan does not bring charter schools and private voucher schools into the new accountability system. Walker and Republican bill sponsors say those changes weren't ready.

The bill was developed following the work last year of bipartisan task forces.

The Senate passed the bill 20-13. The state Assembly was expected to take it up later Tuesday or early Wednesday.
