Eagle Poisoning Case
The director of the Vilas County Humane Society will have to teach others how to properly dispose of animal remains after disposing euthanized cats in the Eagle River dump in April of 2011.
Jennifer Primich, 37, was sentenced this week.
Eight bald eagles were poisoned when they eat the dead cats, ingesting the toxin used to euthanize them. One eagle died.
Volunteers from Raptor Education Group in Antigo, as well as other wildlife experts, rescued the eagles and successfully rehabilitated them after they were discovered at the dump barely alive.
"We worked day and night," said Marge Gibson, REGI's director.
Along with working tirelessly to save the eagles, REGI, a non-profit organization, absorbed the cost which was in the thousands. The eagles have since been released back into the wild.
Gibson says it's important that animals be buried deeply or cremated to avoid other animals from eating the carcasses.
The Vilas County Humane Society says immediately after the incident, they began incinerating all euthanized animals.
