Wednesday night, the Merrill School Board made its final decision to close Pine River Elementary in a 7-2 vote. Earlier this year, Merrill district leaders announced that they faced a $1.4 million dollar budget deficit for the 2012-2013 school year.
On Monday, Linda Yingling, the mother of an 8-year-old daughter who attends Pine River, said she's unhappy with the decision to close the school and was fighting to keep it open. She says, "It's not just going to affect our kids, it's going to affect the whole city and I care about Pine River." Yingling’s daughter will now attend Washington Elementary School.
Maple Grove Elementary was another school on the chopping block.
The School Board voted to keep it open as a charter school next year.
The Pine River building will not be shut down, it will be used for a specialized kindergarten program.
