MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Efforts to collect old prescription medicines for safe disposal continue in Wisconsin.

The state has given 12 county and municipal governments $95,000 in grants to hold events where people can drop off unwanted or expired medicines for safe disposal.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the events started last month, but more will be held through December in Dane, Jefferson, Manitowoc, Oneida, Rock, Vilas, Waukesha and Wood counties.

The effort is intended to keep unused prescriptions from entering the water supply when they are flushed down toilets or dumped in landfills.
