The Wausau man accused of killing Rhonda Mertes in 1999 has pleaded not guilty.

James Emerson appeared in Marathon County court Monday morning.

His next court appearance will be scheduled Monday afternoon.

Emerson, 43, was arrested in June after the state crime lab matched his DNA to DNA found on Mertes' body.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of the involvement of another suspect or suspects.
