Investigators are examining a second set of footprints found at the scene where Rhonda Mertes' body was found, according to Deputy Chief Bryan Hilts of the Wausau Police Department.

Detective Terence Morris helped investigate the scene and was recently brought back onto the case.

He told the Wausau Daily Herald that he thinks evidence will lead to another suspect.

James Emerson was arrested Friday in connection with the 1999 murder of Mertes.

He's charged with first-degree intentional homicide with a party-to-a-crime modifier.

Mertes' body was found severely beaten on the city's east side.

District Attorney Jill Falstad says more DNA was found on Mertes' body.
