Work to Begin on Wausau's Grand Ave. April 28


It's no doubt one of the city's busiest streets, and now it's about to get a makeover.

Beginning later this month, Grand Avenue in Wausau will be the center of multi-million dollar renovation project focused on upgrades and safety measure for bicycles.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin April 28. Crews will resurface more than a mile-and-half of Grand Ave. between Kent Street and Division Street in Wausau. Other improvements include replacing the existing lighting system to meet current standards, providing bicycle accommodations and removing the existing corrugated median.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to keep the roadway open to traffic by staging the construction in phases. WisDOT says access to adjacent properties will be provided at all times except for short durations during milling and paving operations.

Project Details:

Kent Street to Townline Road

Stage one (late April to late June 2014)
•The outside lane, between Kent St. and Townline Rd., will be closed.
•Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will be closed to local traffic. The intersections with Weston and McDonald streets will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.

Stage two (late June to mid-July 2014)
•The inside/median lanes, between Kent St. and Townline Rd., will be closed.
•Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will to be closed to local traffic. The intersections with Weston and McDonald streets will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.

Townline Road to Division Street

Stage three (mid-July to mid-Sept. 2014)
•The outside lane, between Townline Rd. and Division St., will be closed.
•Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will to be closed to local traffic. The intersection with Single Ave. will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.
•Access to the fire station would be maintained at all times.

Stage four (mid-Sept. to early October 2014)
•The inside/median lanes, between Townline Rd. and Division St., will be closed.
•Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will to be closed to local traffic. The intersection with Single Ave. will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.

The project is expect to cost $2.9 million. Eighty percent of the project will be funded by federal transportation fund. The remaining cost will be paid by state and local funding.
