The Wood County Health Department says half of sexually active young people will get a sexually transmitted disease (STD) by age 25. Rates of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea have risen dramatically in recent years. Additionally, more cases of Hepatitis C are being seen.

The Healthy People Wood County Healthy Growth and Development Team is working through many different venues to reduce rising STD rates in Wood county.

The first endeavor will be to raise awareness about STD's, offer free testing for HIV and Hepatitis C and spread the word about Get Yourself Tested (GYT) at local colleges.

On April 8, members of the Healthy Growth and Development team will be hosting an STD testing event at Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids.

The same event will be held on April 10 at University of Wisconsin Marshfield/Wood County. Both events will take place from 10:00am-1:00pm.

A wealth of information, free items, STD testing information, free HIV and Hepatitis C testing, HPV vaccinations for select populations and even a drawing for an IPOD Shuffle will be available.

The group is utilizing toolkits and materials available through the GYT campaign.

Anyone in the Wood County area is welcome to attend the April events. If you would like more information, call (715) 421-8911.
