LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) --Police say the driver found dead in a car that plunged down an embankment and broke through the ice on a La Crosse creek was a student at Winona State University.

Divers recovered the body of 21-year-old Ellen Marie Ahmann, of Woodbury, Minn., from her vehicle submerged in 6 to 8 feet of water on Swift Creek early New Year's Day.

A bus driver called dispatchers Wednesday about 1:30 a.m. when he noticed tire tracks leaving the street and heading over the 40-foot embankment.

A spokesperson from Winona State University says Ahmann enrolled at WSU in fall 2010 and was a finance major. It says counseling and support services are available to all members of the university community who may be affected by this loss.

“As we mourn the loss of this young woman, I encourage you to reach out to those who may be suffering and come together to remember her life. The companionship and support we offer each other may help us make peace with this tremendous loss,” said Patricia Rogers, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Please keep Ellie’s family and friends in your thoughts and hearts.”
