APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- A newspaper investigation has found a record 227 people died from heroin use last year.
Post-Crescent Media reports the deaths mark at 10 percent increase from 2012. Heroin deaths have increased rapidly in recent years after averaging about 30 per year in Wisconsin from 2000 to 2007.
Carol Dixon, of Wausau, says her son, Michael Dixon, died in March 2013 after crashing his car while using heroin.
She says the drug has an "evil, evil stronghold that people do not have a clue what they're getting into."
