Wisconsin Technical College Pay Topped UW Compensation

Full-time instructors in Wisconsin's technical college took home an average of $90,000 last year in base pay and overages. That was slightly more than the $86,000 in compensation for professors at the 13 University of Wisconsin universities.

A Green Bay Press-Gazette report says one instructor at Fox Valley Technical College nearly doubled his $88,000 salary through overages, or additional classes.

Some argue that allowing professors to accumulate overages saves money by avoiding the need to hire part-time workers. Others say the system limits staff diversity and allows for outsized compensation packages.

The highest-paid professor in the UW System is Randall Wright, who teaches finance at UW-Madison. He made $441,000 last season. Only the school's athletic director, basketball coach and two departed football coaches made more.
