OXON HILL, Md. (AP) -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker got a warm reception from conservative activists in an early road-test of possible Republican presidential candidates.

Walker thrilled the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday when he declared: "In America, we believe in the people and not in the government."

The Republican governor says that's why in America, "we take a day off and celebrate the Fourth of July and not the 15th of April."

Walker told The Associated Press late last month that a 2016 presidential bid "would be an option," although it wasn't something he was "actively pursuing."

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate issued a statement saying it was "shocking" that Walker would contemplate a presidential bid "after a dismal record of job loss, division, diminished standards and unethical conduct."
