Wisconsin environmental officials are urging trick-or-treaters to go green.

Department of Natural Resources educators say Halloween traditionally creates a lot of waste and pollution.

They recommend parents and children use natural decorations such as gourds, pumpkins and cornstalks. Families also should use recycled paper to make homemade window decorations, re-use trick-or-treat bags from last year and make their own costumes rather than buying them and throwing them away.

They say trick-or-treaters also can cut down on fuel use and air pollution by walking from house-to-house rather than driving and parents should toss old jack-o-lanterns into compost piles.
