Wis. DNR exceeded hunter recruitment goals

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin wildlife officials say they exceeded hunter recruitment goals over the last year.

The Department of Natural Resources' annual report on hunter recruitment and retention shows 2,136 people participated in the agency's Learn to Hunt program in the year that ended June 30, up 23 percent from the previous year. The agency had hoped to boost participation by 5 percent. Nearly 450 participants were female, up 52 percent from the previous year.

The report says the agency sold nearly 26,000 hunting licenses for mentors, a 12 percent increase. The DNR wanted to see a 2 percent increase. Anyone at least 10 years old can hunt without completing a hunting education course if he or she goes out with a mentor.
