MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Retiring Rep. Pat Strachota has been chosen to replace ousted Rep. Bill Kramer as Republican majority leader in the state Assembly.

Republicans on Tuesday selected Strachota, of West Bend, over challenger Rep. Mary Williams, of Medford, for the position. The ballot is secret and only the results were reported.

Republicans voted earlier to remove Kramer from his position amid sexual harassment allegations.

Both Williams and Strachota previously announced they were not seeking re-election this year.

Strachota will serve as majority leader for the final days of the session this month and through the end of the year. All 99 Assembly seats are up for election this fall.

A new leader would then be elected in January.
