Which Kind Of Smoke Detector Do You Have? You May Want To Check

It’s been an issue every year right around this time, and this winter we've seen even more than we usually would; house fires.

It got us thinking what can be done to prevent these fires, or even help you or your loved ones stay safe from the threat, if a fire were to occur.

We all know having a smoke detector in our homes is a necessity, but many of us may never realize that there are different types of detectors, ones designed for different types of fires.

There are two main types of smoke detectors out on the market today. The first and most common are called ionization detectors. That’s the one most commonly found in homes.
The second is called a photoelectric sensor detector. Both devices can be the difference maker in a time of emergency.

Village of Weston Fire Chief, Steve Meilahn says knowing about different detectors is something most of the public forgets about. "There are a number of different types of smoke detectors. The most popular are ionization or photoelectric. Ionization works quickly with things like garbage can fires, or even window drapes. Photoelectric usually works better to a long smoldering fire. Perhaps someone put a cigarette in a bed, things of that nature."

Chief Meilahn says the best way to ensure you and your family stay safe if there was a fire is to buy a detector that contains both ionization and photoelectric sensor detectors. They can be found at most hardware stores.

The best way to find out if your detectors are up to code is to simply take them down and look on the back. If you are unsure, new detectors can be purchased for right around 20 dollars.

Chief Meilahn says that both detectors will work in a fire, but it is best to be safe by purchasing a device that has both sensors built into it.
