Stevens Point Man to Embark on Cross Country Journey

Cross Country Trip

Inspiring Trip

Not every journey of a thousand miles starts with a footstep. Matt Kluender is using his wheelchair.

He's traveling from his home in Stevens Point all the way to Long Beach, California. His hope is to inspire others who have disabilities to accomplish their dreams -- and go from handicapped to handi-ABLED -- his trademark saying.

He credits family and friends in helping him prep for the trip.

"I call it handi-able but we still need to rely on people for some help," says Kluender. "It's good to work together with people."

A van will follow him during the journey to ensure his safety. He'll have a dog with him to keep spirits high and his uncle will travel next to him on a scooter.

"He's been planning it for a really long time and I'm glad everything came together and he can actually go," says Misty Howland, his sister.

Kluender says the trip should take about two months to complete. But he'll take his time -- making sure to take in the signts and catch a few sunsets along the way.
