Weston Advises All Customers To Run Water Continuously

Weston Municipal Utilities is now advising ALL of its customers to immediately begin running a continuous stream of water from a faucet in your home or building until further notice.

It is recommended this continuous stream of water be a minimum of ¼ inch in diameter (the size of a pencil)*. Running the water is meant to prevent freezing of water service pipes.

Weston Municipal Utilities has been responding to numerous water service freeze-ups this winter. As late as noon on Friday, February 14, the Utility had caught up with the handful of freeze-ups reported for the day. Between 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. on Friday another 5 freeze-ups were reported. The freeze-ups have expanded into widespread areas of the service area in the Village of Weston and Village of Rothschild.

The extended, extreme cold weather has pushed frost depths to between 6 and 7 feet in paved areas where snow has been removed. This is very near the depth of water mains and water service laterals and is the likely cause of the freeze ups that have occurred and would be likely to occur without this action. The ground remains frozen well after the air temperature warms. It may be necessary to keep water running well into spring.

Customer's water bills will be adjusted for the water run to prevent freeze-ups on the basis of historic usage as required by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.

According to the Village of Weston, customers should be aware of the following points until further notice:
- If your water service lateral should freeze following this notice, you will be responsible for the costs of thawing the lateral.
- Make regular observations of the water stream to be sure water is still running.
- If you notice the stream of water reducing in volume or pressure, or if you notice discoloration of the water (indicators of impending freezing) run the water at a full stream for 5 minutes to melt ice that may be forming in the lateral.
- Please make sure that you inform other members of your household or business associates of the need to run water continuously.

Additional information about water service lateral freeze-ups can be found on the Village of Weston's website. If customers have any questions about billing, please call the Utility at 715-359-2876 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
