It wasn't a good day for the Wisconsin Valley Conference down in Madison on Thursday. Wausau West and Wisconsin Rapids were both knocked out of the state hockey tournament.
In the first quarterfinal game of the day, 5th-ranked West fell to #2 Verona 6-3. The Warriors were down 3-1 after two periods. But in the third, goals by Cale Bowman and Justin Anderson tied tha game at 3. But shortly after, the Wildcats were able to re-gain the lead on a goal that was initially not ruled a goal. But once there was a stoppage of play, after a conference with the goal judge, it was ruled a goal. The Wildcats never looked back winning 6-3.
It will be the first time since 2009 the Warriors will not be in the championship game.
In the 2nd quarterfinal matchup, Wisconsin Rapids was overpowered by top-ranked and defending state champ Green Bay Notre Dame. The Tritons owned a 3-0 lead after the first period on their way to a 7-0 victory. The Red Raiders were outshot 46-16 in the game.
