After 28 hall of fame seasons, NewsChannel 7 Sports has confirmed Newman girls basketball coach Tom Weinkauf is calling it a career.
Coach Weinkauf called NC7 sports director Dale Ryman shortly before noon to confirm the decision.
Weinkauf walks away from a 28 year coaching career that saw him win a total of 572 games. His career record is 569-123. The 572 wins is the 8th highest total in state history, boys and girls combined.
Weinkauf is the only coach in state history to win state championships on both the boys and girls side. He won three straight state WIAA boys state championships while coaching at Marathon from 1975-77, and also won three WIAA girls state championships at Newman (2002, 2010, 2011) and two runner-up finishes (2005, 2006).
Inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997 for his achievements at Marathon, Weinkauf took over the Newman program for the 1998-99 season, 15 years after leaving Marathon. In 16 seasons with the Cardinals he was 339-65. In his 12 seasons with the Red Raiders his record was 233-58.
He is also an avid golfer, having been the only player to participate in the first 50 years of the NewsChannel 7 Golf Classic.
Weinkauf is the 2nd hall of fame coach to retire within a week. Last Wednesday, Wausau West hockey coach Pete Susens announced his retirement.
