With this cold weather, many parents are inclined to bundle their kids up then put them in their car seats. In reality, that is not the case.
Doctors and car seat technicians say you should try the coat challenge. To try the coat challenge, put your child in their car seat with their winter coat on, then tighten the straps so it is snug and secure. Without loosening or adjusting the straps, take your child out. Remove their coat then put them back in the car seat. Once they are back in, see if you can pinch the upper part of the strap where their shoulders are. If you can, the straps are too loose.
Safer Kids Wausau Area recommends putting your child in their car seat and putting their on backward after you strap them in.
"That way it's still over them and it's not interfering with the harness," says Michelle Armstrong, the Safer Kids coordinator at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
She says trying these tests and making the changes can reduce injuries and save lives.
