If you've driven north of Wausau on Merrill Avenue lately you may have noticed it looks quite a bit different.

Crews are in the middle of a $28- million interchange reconstruction project.

A spokesperson with the Department of Transportation tells NewsChannel 7 that the old County-U overpass did not meet current standards, as it was too low for vehicles passing underneath.

The project will reconstruct the County U/Merrill Avenue Bridge and turn it from two lanes into four.

County U is closed at U.S. 51 and will remain closed until early fall.

The project is expected to be completed by November 2014.

The DOT says despite the late winter, the project seems to be on track.
