Wausau's Concert on the Square series has been going on for more than 20 years, but its not just a great way to spend your Wednesday evenings; its helping local businesses as well.
"We approximate between 2,500 and 3,000 people over the course of the evening," Kari Rasmussen, Wausau Events Director said.
On any given Wednesday night in the summer, you can expect a packed house on Wausau's 400 block. But you may not realize how the concerts on the square boot our local economy.
"The businesses really do take advantage of those crowds," Kari said, "and [they] try to create specials that work well with concert goers."
She says local concert goers and visitors often take note of downtown restaurants and shops.
"Even if they aren't necessarily shopping that night I think what it does is it just creates a level of comfort, to come to downtown," Kari said.
Just down the street from the concert at Downtown Grocery, they can always tell when the concert draws a crowd.
"We do see a number of strangers in the store for the first time, saying 'oh, wow, I've never been here before, how long have you been here?'," Kevin Korpela, managing member said.
He says many stop in for picnic supplies before the music starts.
